Charles Bell Inducted into Beaver
County Sports Hall of Fame.
One of the more gifted players to come out of Beaver High School was
Charlie Bell. A versatile and talented athlete, he was especially
strong in football and track & Field.
The 1964 graduate began earning nationwide attention as
early as his junior high years. That is because as a member of three
undefeated Beaver Junior High School football teams, Charlie was recognized
by Sports Illustrated, Jet Magazine and the Baltimore Courier for one
particular play. Following a Beaver touchdown, the strong-legged
youngster kicked off with the ball traveling all the way out of the stadium,
It was estimated the kick went over 100 yards, which drew national press.
Charlie continued to rack up headlines in his high school
days. He helped Beaver set a consecutive game wining streak that was
one of the longest in the state with his all around play as the star running
back and defensive back in addition to his kicking duties. In his
junior year, he was regarded with the All-Conference honors playing offense
and defense. His senior year saw those honors being repeated. So
good was his senior year, Charlie was named All-State and played in the Big
33 All-Star Game. He also received UPI All-American mention.
In track and field, his athletic talents produced a
couple of school records. In the broad jump, no known as the long
jump, he went 21 feet 3 inches, which was one of the top marks in the state.
The versatile Charlie also was a phenom in the 100 yard low hurdles, setting
a school mark of 13.1 seconds in that event.
After graduation, Charlie did not attend college right
away, but his athletic prowess got him tryouts with both the New York Giants
and the New York Jets. The Giants liked him as a place-kicker, while
the Jets were impressed with his all-around play. He eventually was
sent by the Jets to play with their minor league affiliate at Bridgeport,
CT, where he played wide receiver and cornerback. Charlie played the
one year and decided to resume his education and concentrate on hi family.
He and his wife Harriet moved to Greensboro, NC and eventually had five
Children: Wendy, Charlie JR., Troy, Tracy and Wanda.
Charlie eventually got a degree from Greensboro College
in 1993, majoring in Sociology and Psychology. he later received his
Masters in Human Resource Counseling at North Carolina A&T. He also
attended the University of Southern California of Professional Studies to
pursue a Jurist Doctorate Degree.
He has been active in the Greensboro community, being on
the City Council and helping youth learn the game of football as a Pop
Warner Coach.
